Deze keer geen voorbeeld van onjuist spatiegebruik, maar een klein stukje geschiedenis. Een mooie signalering van onjuist spatiegebruik in de Nederlandse taal werd gedaan door de Australische taalkundige B.C. Donaldson (die overigens ook een grammatica van het Nederlands op zijn naam heeft). Hij schreef in 1983 over onjuist spatiegebruik in zijn boek "Dutch - A Linguistic History of Holland and Belgium". Op bladzijde 40 staat te lezen:
"Compound nouns are usually written as one word. [...] There is, however, and I feel I should add unfortunately, an ever growing tendency to write compund nouns as seperate words, even when medial sounds are used to complete the compound e.g. 'klanten service', 'bibliotheeks uren', 'stads vernieuwingsgebied'. Whether this is simply due to carelessness, influence of English or a genuine belief that there is nothing wrong with such spellings, I have been unable to ascertain. [...] Whether compound nouns are written as one word, two words or hyphenated is indeed a problem for all in English; the Dutch had an ideal solution but seem to be heading into the same confusion we find ourselves in. The practice should not be copied."
Blijkbaar vinden ook buitenlandse taalkundigen de Nederlandse regel om samenstellingen aaneen te schrijven een verstandig idee. Het is jammer dat het betreffende boek op dit moment niet meer in de winkel te koop is.
